The State Tariff Tracker (“Tracker”) is a first-of-its-kind database that provides a comprehensive estimate of tariffs paid by state on all imports from all countries. The Tracker breaks down imports and tariff costs by country, product, and month, capturing savings from free trade agreements (FTAs) and preference programs, as well as additional duties due to major tariff actions at the state level. As of March 2026, the Tracker offers monthly data from 2013 through 2025. All data are updated monthly.
Key features of the Tracker include:
- Comprehensive data on historical tariffs paid by state on all products from all countries.
- Savings from FTAs, preference programs, and legislative actions by state.
- Additional costs of major tariff actions (e.g., Section 301, 232, IEEPA) paid by state.
- Tariff exposure by industry classifications such as HTS, NAICS, and End Use.
With over 1 billion data points, the Tracker offers unparalleled insight into state-level trade, providing critical details to educate on the nuances of trade and inform policy decisions.
Impact of the Tracker Data:
Research based on the MTT database is regularly cited by journalists covering trade policy and the real-world effects of tariffs.
Our work has helped reporters quantify the economic impact of tariff measures at a state and industry level. Analyses built using the MTT have been referenced in national and regional outlets, including:
- Which states paid the most of Trump’s overturned tariffs (Axios, February 22, 2026)
- Tariff bill in U.S. states hits $200 billion as affordability and Trump head into midterms showdown (CNBC, February 11, 2026)
- How Trump Administration Aimed Tariff Exemptions at Rising Food Costs (The Wall Street Journal, November 9, 2025)
Project Spotlight: State Trade Impact Fact Sheets
One example of the Tracker database in action is our Agriculture Trade Snapshot series for Farmers for Free Trade, which analyzes how trade policies affect local economies and agriculture.
Using the Tracker, we produce state-level reports that highlight tariffs on key farm inputs. These fact sheets translate complex trade data into clear insights for policymakers, journalists, and business leaders.
